Immerse yourself in the medieval essence

We invite you to take a journey through history to discover the medieval origins of Mont-roig del Camp

The municipal area of Mont-roig del Camp stretches between the sea and the mountains, on an extensive alluvial plain. In the past, it was inhabited in several areas. You should imagine the town of Mont-roig as a walled settlement presided over by a castle, accompanied by the deserted village of la Pobla d’en Taudell, while the coast was protected by Miramar or Guardamar, where a watchtower once stood. We invite you to immerse yourself in the medieval essence of Mont-roig through a walk or a visit to the old town, where the Old Church and the New Church stand out, along with the gates, the ancient wall, the prison, and the washhouses.

CHURCH OF SANT MIQUEL

Where the medieval castle of Mont-roig del Camp once stood, today stands the Church of Sant Miquel. The church was born from the desire to replace the Old Church, and its construction was almost eternal. It began to be designed in 1780, the works were halted in 1835, and the first mass was not celebrated until 1946. Such a long wait was not in vain, today, due to its size, it is popularly known as the cathedral of Baix Camp. Nevertheless, it remains unfinished, and it is the neighboring Old Church that still marks the hours with its historic bell tower.

OLD CHURCH

The history of the Old Church has not been easy, it has undergone various modifications over time and also suffered the looting and pains of war, which led to the construction of the New Church or Church of Sant Miquel. Today we can admire a beautiful Renaissance building that made use of the old defense tower that guarded the Avall Gate to erect its bell tower. It stands out for its double doorway in the purest classical style. Although no religious services are held there, the bell tower has never stopped ringing the bells to mark the hours, since the bell tower of the New Church remains unfinished.

GATES AND WALL

You can imagine medieval Mont-roig and its walled town through the remains of the wall and the two gates, Avall and Canal. The first one, located in Joan Miró Square, was the main entrance to the town and was accompanied by a defense tower, now converted into the bell tower of the Old Church. If you head towards Les Hortes, behind the church, you can see more remains of the wall on Murada Street. You will reach the Canal Gate, a double gate accompanied by a tower. Finally, if you visit Mare de Déu de la Roca Street, to the north, you can see the tower of the Torrells house, also known as the Moor’s Tower.

PRISON

Just behind the New Church of Sant Miquel and very close to where the old castle of Mont-roig del Camp once stood, you will find the remains of the old prison. It is integrated into Carrer de la Pica and stands out for its arched doorway made of Red Mountain stone and a barred window.
