SMALL RURAL JEWELS OF THE MONT-ROG LANDSCAPE
In the face of the effort of the earth, the ingenuity of man. The dry stone huts are heartbeats of history that resonate in the middle of the landscape, silent witnesses of a time when stone was transformed into a refuge, tool and living memory. They are modest constructions, but full of meaning, which explain the deep relationship between the farmers and the land they cultivated.
Everywhere in the world, wherever there has been a stone, it has been used to take advantage of it. In Mont-roig, this translates into more than a hundred listed dry stone huts, many of which are preserved in good condition. Over generations, the most specialized farmers built them with ancestral techniques, fitting the stones together without any mortar, only with ingenuity, experience and a tenacious will to face the needs of everyday life in the field.
These structures not only served as shelter from the sun or rain, but also to store tools or even to rest in the middle of a hard day. All in all, an austere and functional architecture, but also full of beauty and respect for the territory.
A legacy made stone by stone
Mont-roig has a great diversity of huts, each with its own history, shape and character. Some are small and simple; others are surprising for their proportions or construction detail. They all have in common that they have been built stone by stone by humble hands, with knowledge transmitted orally, and with an intimate relationship with the environment.
This legacy, often forgotten in favour of other more monumental buildings such as castles or churches, speaks to us of another type of wisdom: that of constant work, that of popular knowledge, that of rural life. Walking among the huts is, thus, taking a journey to the most authentic essence of the rural world.
